Most of our every day activities need energy in order to take place. At work we need energy for appliances like computers or machinery, when the climate changes we need energy for heating or cooling, and we need energy for food production.
With one in five people still lacking access to modern electricity, it is obvious that there is a great need for more reliable energy for all.
Billions of people rely on wood, coal, charcoal or animal waste for cooking and heating, in turn this contributes to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. The aim of Goal 7 is to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. Thus, not only ensuring energy for all, but also ensuring that the energy is sustainable and not carbon intensive.
As the United Nations states on their Sustainable Development website, Sustainable energy is opportunity – it transforms lives, economies and the planet.
